Topic 4 - Reactions of Metals Flashcards
what is the basic word equation for an acid and a metal?
acid + metal = salt + hydrogen
how do the reactions of different metals show how reactive the metals are?
the more reactive the metal, the faster the reaction
how would you set up an equation to investigate the differences in reactivity of different metals by using their reactions with acids?
- set up 3 boiling tubes and fill them with equal amounts of dilute HCl
- place pieces of magnesium, zinc and iron in separate test tubes
- speed of reaction is indicated by the rate at which bubbles are given off
what is the basic reaction of metals with water?
metal + water = metal hydroxide + hydrogen
which metals react vigorously with water?
very reactive metals
how is the amount of energy given off by metals reacting with water affected by reactivity?
the amount of energy given off by the reaction increases with the reactivity of the metal
if a metal does not react much with water, what will they react with?
steam
which metal does not react with water or steam?
copper
