reacting an acid (containing one of the ions you want) with an insoluble base (containing the other ion you need)

1. heat the acid in a water bath - speeding up the reaction
2. add the base to the acid. the acid has been neutralised when excess solid sinks to the bottom of the flask
3. filter off the excess solid
4. heat the solution gently to evaporate off some of the water. leave the solution to cool and allow the salt to crystalise
