Topic 4 - Selective Breeding Flashcards
explain selective breeding and its impact on plants and animals
an artificial process in which organism with desired characteristics are chosen as parents for the next generation, this will impact plants and animals because in the future they will share very similar genes reducing variation
what are the steps for selective breeding?
1) decide which characteristics are important
2) choose the parents that show these
3) select the best offspring to breed for the next generation
4) repeat process continually
advantages of selective breeding
higher resistance to pests and disease
produce better quality food
disadvantages of selective breeding
takes centuries
less variation therefore prone to diseases
