Topic 4 - Classification Flashcards
How have genetic analysis led to the suggestion of the three domains rather than the 5 kingdoms classification?
it’s been demonstrated that some organisms have some unused genes in the making of proteins, and other organisms use the entire genes to code for proteins, none of which are unused
what is the 3 domain system
archaea, bacteria, eukaryote
what is the archaea?
cells that live in extreme environments, contain no nucleus and have unused sections of genes
what is bacteria?
cells that have no nucleus and no unused sections of genes
what is eukaryote?
cells that have a nucleus and unused sections of genes
what was the early classification system?
It divided organisms based on what they looked like
published by Carl Linnaeus
Name the Linnaeus system of classification
kindom
phylum
class
order
genus
species
why is it useful to group organisms?
often provides useful information about its evolutionary history and which other organisms are related to it
What is the genus and species for Dracaena Marginata?
dracaena = genus (surname)
marginata = species (first name)
What are the 5 kingdoms used today?
animals
plants
protists
fungi
prokaryotes
2 facts about the animal kindom
multicellular and no cell walls
2 facts about plant kindom
multicellular, cellulose cell walls
2 facts about fungi
multicellular, cell walls made of chitin
2 facts about protists kindom
mostly unicellular, some have cell walls of different substances
2 facts about prokaryotes kindom
unicellular, flexible cell walls
