Topic 2 - Mitosis And The Cell Cycle Flashcards
What is mitosis?
The process by which a single parent’s cell divides to make two new daughter cells
What are the stages in mitosis?
Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
Cytokinesis
What happens during interphase?
the cell will replicate organelles and replicate its DNA
What happens during prophase?
The nucleus starts to break down and spindle fibres appear
What happens during metaphase?
The chromosomes are lined up on the spindle fibres across the middle of the cell
What happens during anaphase
The chromosome copies are separated and moved to either end of the cell
What happens during telophase?
A membrane forms around each set of chromosomes to form nuclei
After mitosis cytokinesis takes place, what happens?
the cytoplasm of the parental cell divides into two genetically identical diploid daughter cells
