Topic 2 - The Synapse Flashcards
1
Q
What’s a synapse?
A
A gap between 2 neurones
2
Q
What happens at the synapse
A
- When an impulse reaches the end of a neurone a chemical (neurotransmitter) is released across the gap
- the chemical then diffuses across the synapse,
- when it reaches the next neurone it starts another impulse
3
Q
What’s the function of an axon?
A
Carries electrical impulses away from the cell body
4
Q
What’s the function of a dendron?
A
Carries electrical impulses from the receptor towards the cell body
5
Q
What’s the function of a dendrite?
A
receive electrical impulses
6
Q
What’s the function of myelin sheath?
A
an insulating layer that forms around nerves and allows impulses to travel quickly
7
Q
What’s the function of a neurotransmitter?
A
passes impulses from one nerve cell to another across a synapse
8
Q
What’s the function of a synapse?
A
Ensures impulses travel in one direction
