Topic 2 - Nervous System Flashcards
What is does the central nervous system consist of
the brain protected by the skull and the spinal cord protected by the vertebrate
What does the nervous system do?
Enables humans to react to their surroundings and coordinate their behaviour
What does the brain do?
involved in the processing of sensory information and controlling homeostatic processes
What are the 3 main types of neurones?
- Sensory
- Relay
- Motor
What’s the function of sensory neurones?
carry information as impulses from the receptors to the CNS
What’s the function of relay neurones?
Carry information from the sensory to the motor neurones
What’s the function of motor neurones?
Carry instructions from the CNS to the effectors
What do receptors do?
Detect stimuli (eg. Receptors in the ear detect sound)
What do effectors do?
Produce a specific response to a detected stimulus ( muscles and glands are effectors, muscles respond by contracting and glands release hormones)
