Tittues, Organs and Systems (2.1.6) Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A group of cells that are specialised to work together. They can contain more than one cell type.
List 4 types of animal tissues.
Squamous epithelium
Ciliated epithelium
Muscle
Cartilage
List three points about squamous epithelium tissues.
Single-layer of flat cells lining a surface
Thin exchange surface for substances to diffuse across quickly.
Alveoli in the lungs (and other places)
List three points about ciliated epithelium tissues.
A layer of cells covered in cilia
Found on the surface of cells that need to move things
Trachea - wafting mucus
List one point about muscle tissues and three examples of them.
Made of bundles of elongated muscle fibre cells
Smooth (stomach)
Cardiac (heart)
Skeletal (used to move)
List 3 points about cartilage.
Connective tissue found in the joints
Shapes and supports the ears, nose and windpipe
Formed when chondroblasts secrete an extracellular matrix substance containing protein fibres which become trapped inside.
What can be found in xylem tissue?
What can be found in phloem tissue?
Xylem vessels (dead)
Parenchyma cells
Sieve cells
Companion cells
Ordinary plant cells
What is an organ?
A group of different tissues that work together to perform a particular function.
Give two examples of organs and the tissues that make them up.
- *Lungs**
- squamous epithelium tissue (alveoli)
- ciliated epithelium tissue (bronchi)
- elastic connective tissue
- vascular tissue
- *Leaf**
- palisade tissue
- epidermal tissue
- xylem tissue
- phloem tissue
What is an organ system?
A group of organs that work together to form organ systems.
List the organs, tissues and cells of the respiratory system.
Organs
Nose
Mouth
Larynx
Trachea
