Q

What are the methods of in-situ conservation?

A

Protected areas
National parks and wildlife reserves restrict development and farming

Control or prevent the introduction of certain species
For example, the grey squirrel

Promote particular species by protecting food sources or nesting sites

Legal Protection

to a safer area

Q

What are the advantages and disadvantages of ex-situ conservation?

A

You can protect individual animals in a controlled environment and things like
predation and hunting can be managed more easily.

Only a small number of individuals can be cared for and it can be difficult and expensive to create the right environment.

Animals are more likely to be habituated to human contact and less likely to show natural behaviour. Many species can not breed successfully in captivity.

Q

Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES)

A

An agreement designed to increase international cooperation in regulating trade in wild animal and plant specimens.

Member countries outlaw the killing of endangered species.

Helps to conserve species by limiting trade through licensing.

Designed to raise awareness of threats to biodiversity through education.
