High Confidence - Lipids Flashcards
Name three types of lipid.
Triglycerides
Phospholipids
Cholesterol
Describe the structure of a triglyceride.
One molecule of glycerol with three fatty acids attached to it.
Name the two kinds of fatty acids and explain their structure.
Saturated fats lack double bonds between the individual carbon atoms
Unsaturated fats have at least one double bond in the fatty acid chain.
What test do you conduct to test for the presence of lipids?
Emulsion test.
How do you perform a test for lipids?
Shake the test subject with ethanol for about a minute. Pour the solution into water.
What indicates a positive test for lipids?
A milky colour in the test solution.
The more noticeable the milky colour, the more lipid is present.
