What is the two-part scientific Latin naming system is called?
Binomial
What is variation?
The differences that exist between individuals.
How do you calculate mean?
mean = total number of all the values in your data
the number of values in your data
Example 1: What is the Mean of these numbers?
6, 11, 7
Add the numbers: 6 + 11 + 7 = 24
Divide by how many numbers (there are 3 numbers): 24 / 3 = 8
The Mean is 8
What does standard deviation show?
The spread of values about the mean.
What might a stretched bell curve indicate?
Larger standard deviation. Greater variation in the sample.
When different species develop similar characteristics, what is this called, and why might it happen?
Convergent Evolution - Because they have adapted to live in similar environments.
How does pesticide resistance evolve by natural selection?
Variations in the genotype of individuals in a poplation of insects make them naturally resistant.
Only resistant individuals survive.
The alleles which provide the resistance are passed on to the next generation.
How do you calculate Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient?
Rank both sets of data.
The highest value of each variable is given the rank of 1.
Work out the difference of each rank and square it.
Find the total number of data pairs.
Enter this data into the equation.
When comparing your result from the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient to the table of critical values.
What are you looking to find?
If the value is greater than p=0.05, it indicates that there is only a 5% chance that the result is down to chance.
The result is statistically significant.
