Titration experiment - SC14 Flashcards
by what method can you obtain a dry soluble salt from an alkali?
crystalisation
What is vital when trying to obtain a neutral solution?
mix the acid and alkali in the correct proportions to get products of only water and the desired salt (no excess of acid or alkali!!)
What equipment is needed for this experiment?
a graduate pipette, a pipette filler, a burette, conical flask, measuring cylinder, beaker, stand + clamp, funnel, white tile, evaporating basin, tripod, gauze mat, heat resistant mat, Bunsen burner
why is a white tile needed in the experiment?
to see the colour change more clearly
what solutions/ (non object apparatus) is needed for the experiment?
Hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide, phenolphthalein indicator
What is the purpose of the burette?
To measure out an accurate and repeatable volume of acid it takes for neutralisation to happen
What balanced equation would be created from this experiment?
HCl (l) + NaOH(l) –> H2O (l) + NaCl(aq)
In what case is titration used?
To guarantee that the remaining solution only contains a salt and water
