electrolysis - SC10 Flashcards
what is electrolysis?
The breaking down of compounds/substances using a direct electrical current
in what states can electrolysis occur to ionic compounds
molten or dissolved in water
what is the positive electrode called?
anode
what is the negative electrode called
cathode
what are electrodes in electrolysis usually made out of
graphite
What does CCR mean?
Cations go to the Cathode to be Reduced
what does AAO mean?
Anions go to the Anode to be Oxidised
What does RIG mean?
Reduction = electrons gained on the left side
what does OIL mean?
Oxidisation = electrons lost on the right side
what is electrolyte?
ionic substance with free moving ions to conduct electricity
how is reduction shown in a half equation?
ion + electrons (left) –> element (right)
how is oxidation shown in a half equation?
ion (left) —> element + electrons (right)
are positive or negative ions attracted to the cathode?
positive ions
are positive or negative ions attracted to the anode?
negative ions
How is electrolysis set up?
2 electrodes in a solution of electrolyte with electric current running between the 2, connected to a power pack
