Tissues and Membranes Flashcards
Epithelial Tissue
Protects by covering internal and external surfaces
Connective Tissue
Tissue that has cells whose intracellular secretions support and connect the organs and tissues of the body; found in bones, cartilage, mucous membranes, muscles, nerves, skin, and all internal organs
Nervous Tissue
Has the ability to react to stimuli
Tendon
A cord of fibrous connective tissue that attaches a muscle to a bone or other structure
Fasciae (Dense Fibrous Connective Tissue)
A band or sheet of fibrous membrane covering, binding and supporting muscles
Areolar (Loose Connective Tissue)
A tissue that surrounds various organs and supports both nerve cells and blood vessels that transport nutrient materials (to cells) and wastes (away from the cells)
Adipose
Type of tissue that cushions, supports, and insulates the body
Exocrine Gland Cells
Gland that secretes their substances into ducts; Examples: Mammary glands, Sweat glands, Salivary glands
Endocrine Gland Cells
Gland cells from ductless which secrete their substance (hormones) directly into the bloodstream; Examples: Thyroid gland, Adrenal gland
Dense Fibrous Connective Tissue
Forms ligaments, tendons and aponeuroses
Osseus Connecitve Tissue
Comprises the skeleton of the body, which supports and protects underlying soft tissue parts and organs; serves as attachments for skeletal muscles
Hyaline Cartilage
Cartilage found on the articular bone surfaces and at the nose tip, bronchi, and bronchial tubes and in the coastal cartilage, larynx, and trachea.
Fibrocartilage
Located within the interverbal discs and public symphysis between the pubic bones
Elastic Cartilage
Located in the auditory ear tube, external ear, epiglottis and larynx
Blood
Transports nutrient and oxygen molecules to cells and metabolic wastes away from cells
Lymph
Transports tissue fluid, proteins, fats and other materials from the tissues to the circulatory system
Cardiac Muscle Tissue
Helps the heart contract in order to pump blood through and out of the heart
Smooth (Nonstraited Involuntary)
Muscle tissue that makes the walls of the digestive tract, genitourinary tract, respiratory tract, blood vessels and lymphatic tissue
Skeletal (Striated Voluntary)
Muscle tissue attached to the movable parts of the skeleton and is capable of powerful and rapid contractions
Irritability
Ability of a nerve tissue to respond to environmental changes
Conductivity
Ability to carry a nerve impulse (message)
Epithelial Membrane
Protects the body by covering external and internal surfaces
Connective Membranes
Consists of two layers of connective tissue
`Respiratory Mucosa
Lines the respiratory passages
Gastric Mucosa
Lines the stomach
Intestinal Mucosa
Lines the small and large intestines
Pleural Membrane
Lines the lungs
Pericardial Membrane
Lines the heart cavity
Peritoneal Membrane
Lines the abdominal cavity
An example of a tissue transplant
Blood Transfusions
Tissue more likely to be rejected by the body
Organ
Fat tissue
