Tissue healing and repair Flashcards
What are the 4 steps in tissue healing and repair?
injury, inflammation, organization & regeneration
Which of the two examples represents first intention healing A or B? A. A wound from a tumor removal that was too big to close completely and therefore required bandages for 3 weeks while it closed. B. A 0.5cm surgical wound on a cats abdomen from her spay.
B
Describe inflammation
Vasoconstriction for 10 minutes followed by vasodilation, edema (swelling) and clot formation.
Phagocytosis of bacteria by neutrophils.
Describe wound organization
Formation of granulation tissue in the wound and ongoing phagocytosis of dead cells, debris and pathogens.
Describe regeneration/fibrosis
Coverage of granulation tissue with epithelia, wound contraction in wounds of sufficient size and replacement of granulation tissue with fibrous scar tissue in wounds of sufficient size.
