The immune system Flashcards

1
Q

What are the main features of the adaptive immune system?

A

The adaptive immune system works specifically using chemical and cellular components under significant regulation and monitoring to defend the body against infection. There is a delay in the effectiveness of the adaptive immune system while it adapts to defend against specific infectious agents once it has been exposed to them.

Q

What is the difference between the two types of vaccines listed in 4?

A

The organism in a modified live vaccine is alive but has been modified to prevent it from causing serious disease. The organism in a killed or inactivated vaccine has been killed and is therefore not able to cause disease but can stimulate an immune response.

Q

What are the main components of the innate immune system?

A

They are physical barriers such as the skin and mucous membranes, fluids such as tears and saliva, internal systems such as complement and interferons and cellular components such as natural killer cells and phagocytic cells such as neutrophils

Q

What are the main components of the adaptive immune system?

A

They are antibodies/immunoglobulins directed against specific pathogens that block infection and cells such as cytotoxic T-cells and Helper T-cells that kill infected cells or activate phagocytic cells to kill the pathogens they have ingested.

Q

What are the main features of the innate immune system?

A
