The nervous system Flashcards
What are the 2 body systems that the body uses to communicate with itself?
The nervous system and the endocrine system.
What are the 2 main divisions of the nervous system?
The central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS)
What is the main cell of the nervous system called?
A neuron.
How do nerves transmit information around the body?
They communicate via electrical impulses that are transmitted via their specialized cell processes called axons.
How do nerves communicate with other nerves or structures in the body?
Via synapses where chemicals called neurotransmitters are released and bind to receptors in the target structure.
Name the 2 main structures in the Central Nervous System.
The brain and spinal cord.
Describe in simple terms the role of the spinal cord
To transmit sensory information from the periphery to the brain and to transmit motor instructions from the brain to the periphery.
What are the 2 branches of the autonomic nervous system?
The sympathetic and the parasympathetic.
What is the sympathetic nervous system in charge of?
Fight or flight.
What is the parasympathetic nervous system in charge of?
Rest and digest.
