What are some complications of tinea capitis?
- Scarring alopecia
- Kerion - untreated tinea capitis that leads to a raised, spongy, pustular mass.
What is the most common cause of tinea capitis?
Trichophyton tonsurans.
What is another cause of tinea capitis that is aquired from cats or dogs?
Microsporum canis
How do you diagnose tinea capitis?
- Scalp scrapings
- Lesions due to Microsporum canis green fluorescence under Wood’s lamp.
How do you manage tinea capitis?
Topical ketoconazole shampoo should be given for the first two weeks to reduce transmission
- Trichophyton tonsurans - Terbinafine
- Microsporum canis - Griseofulvin
What are the most common causes of tinea corporis (ringworm)
- Trichophyton rubrum
- Trichophyton verrucosum
What can tinea corporis be treated with?
Oral fluconazole
What is the common cause of tinea pedis (athletes foot)
The fungus Trichophyton
What is the treatment for tinea pedis?
First line - topical imidazole, undecenoate or terbinafine.
