How many compartments is the thoracic cavity divided into?
Thoracic cavity divided into 3 compartments
Why are the compartments in not the same dimensions in the thoracic cavity?
Due to the heart, not the same dimensions
Where are the 3 components of the thoracic cavity found?
- One on each side for the lungs
- A central one where the heart is found
What is the mediastinum?
Mediastinum is the space between both lungs inside the chest cavity
What is the pleural cavity?
Pleural cavity is thin fluid space between the visceral and parietal pleura
What fissure is only present in the right lung but not the left and at what rib is it found in?
- Horizontal fissure only in right lung
- Found in 4th rib
What rib is the oblique fissure found in both right and left lung?
Oblique fissure is found in 6th rib
Why is the right main bronchus clinically important and due to what reason does this occur?
Right main bronchus clinically important as kids can get coin stuck here. This is due to it being vertical
Where is the phrenic and vagus nerve located in the lungs, relative to the lung
- Phrenic nerve is posterior relative to the lung
- Vagus nerve is anterior relative to the lung
What is the azygos vein and where does it drain?
Azygous vein is where drainage of the posterior intercostal area for venous system as well as lower abdomen area. Drains into vena cava.
