Thoracic Suplementary Q's Flashcards
What are the stabilising features of the thoracic spine?
Bony features- SP’s, TP’s, costal cartilages, ribs
Rib cage- adds rigidity and stability to the thoracic spine by preventing excessive movement.
Ligaments- anterior and posterior longitudinal, interspinous, supraspinous, flavum, costotransverse.
Muscles- pectoralis major, pectoralis minor, serratus anterior, lower and middle trapezius, erector spinae.
Intervertebral discs- provide cushioning, aid shock absorption and distribute weight, while allowing limited movement between the vertebrae.
What is the end feel for thoracic rotation?
Firm/ elastic
This is because it is soft tissue that limits the movement, e.g.
Ligaments- Ligamentum flavum, interspinous and supraspinous ligaments (these ligaments connect the spinous processes of the vertebrae and stretch during rotation, anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments.
Muscles- onliques cannot concentrically contract further OR inability to eccentrically contract/ elongate further.
which structures limit normal movemnet of thoracic extension?
Ligaments- anterior longitudinal, flavum,
Muscles- inability for abdominals to eccentrically contract/ elongate.
inability for erector spinae to concentrically contract further.
