Biomechanics Flashcards
What are the 3 main benefits of a warm up?
-Increases Blood Flow
-Increases Temperature
-Reduces Risk of Injury
what is the benefits of increasing blood flow before a stretch?
it helps to deliver oxygen and nutrients to muscles makingthem more pliable and less prone to injury during the stretch.
what is the benefits of increasing temeperature of muscles before a stretch?
it increases the efectiveness of the stretch due to greater tissue extensibility as the muslces are more respomsie when heated up.
how does warming up befre stertching reduce risk of injury?
cold muscles are more sustainable to tears and strains.
By warming up it prepares the ligaments, tendons and muscles for the stress of stertching
how long should you hold a stretch for and why?
between 20-30 seconds in order to ensure maximum elongation
what is the difference between the plastic and elastic region?
Plastic region- ability to permanently change
Elastic region- recovers orignal shape and properties
What type of force is applied during the stretch?
Tensile force
what is a tensile force?
the deformation or elongation of a solid body due to the application of a tensile force or stress.
how many times should you repeat the passive stretch?
3x within a session to achieve a maximum change in length.
how ofeten should a person repeat a stretch?
they should repeat every 60-90 minutes to maintain/ increase change in length
At what speed should you apply a stretch and why?
Slow because:
Slow stretch- provides greater elongation for the same amount of stress applied
Fast stretch- greater stress is needed to achieve same change in length.
(this is becasue stifness is increased if you apply force fast)
