NMM- Lumbar Pathologies Flashcards
What is Spondylosis?
age-related degeneration of the vertebrae and discs of the lower back
describe some symptoms of Spondylosis
- non-specific LBP
- episodic acute LBP
- core instability
- lumbar radiculopathy
- spinal stenosis
what is Spondylolysis?
a stress fracture at the pars interarticularis, usually occurs at L5
What is the pars interarticularsis?
the thin, small portion of vertebrae that connect the upper and lower facet joints
what increases the risk of developing Spondylolysis?
increased risk for those involved in repetitive hyper-extension activities of the trunk (e.g. gymnastics)
what are the symptoms of Spondylolysis?
- LPB with or without sciatica
- Aggrivated by standing
- If sciatica: decreased SLR
- Possible visible or palpable ‘step’
what is Stenosis?
Narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower part of the back
Name the symptoms of Stenosis
- numbness, tingling, cramping
- P & N’s
- Pain (lumbar or sciatic)
- Weakness in the legs
- Loss of sensation in the feet
what are the aggravating factors of stenosis?
standing, extension, walking
what are the easing factors of stenosis?
rest and flexion
what is cauda equina?
nerve root compression that causes pain, incontinence and weakness
name the 5 main characteristic of CES
- Bilateral neurogenic sciatica
- Reduced perineal (saddle) sensation
- Altered bladder function
- Loss of anal tone
- Loss of sexual function
Explain the CES Q’s using HORSETAIL
H- have u had any of the following:
O- orgasm changes
R- retention
S- sciatica
E- erectile dysfunction
T- tone changes
A- altered sensation
I- inability to stop
L- leakage
