What’s the definition of a case study?
A study conducted over a long period of tie on an individual or small group.
What was the aim of the study?
to provide an account of the psychotherapeutic treatment of a 25 year old woman who was referred to thigpen and cleckely because of severe and blinding headaches.
What are two strengths of case studies?
lots of data over a long period of time (see development)
high in ecological validity- on a real life case.
What are two weaknesses of case studies?
Time consuming to collect data
Sample difficult to generalise as usually based on an individual or a small group.
What were the methods used on eve?
EEG hypnosis interviews observations projective tests (ink block test) IQ test memory test
What was the projection test?
Shown standardized abstract designs and asked what they look like
Responses are analysed to measure personality
Project personality into the ink block
What evidence is there to back up eves mpd?
A letter written by eve, with two different kinds of handwriting and she didn’t remember finishing it or sending it.
What are characteristics of eve white?
reserved shy quiet IQ of 100 wasn't aware of eve black
What are characteristics of eve black?
carefree flirtatious mischievous aware of eve white different manners, expressions and gestures to eve white.
What are characteristics of Jane?
assertive confident aware of both eves strengths of both eves believed she was created by therapists Believed she appeared after 8 months
How long did thigpen and cleckly spend studying the two eves?
14 months
What data did they collect?
100 hours worth of interviews
What procedure did psychologist have to take before they could access eve black?
First eve white had to be hypnotised for eve black to come out, however eventually they could speak to her just by calling by her name.
