What are the five psycho sexual stages of development?

What stages do all children pass through?
Systematic
What age does the oral stage occur and what does it include ?
Birth to 1 year
children get gratification from putting things in their mouth
What age does the anal stage occur and what does it include?
1-3 years
child focuses on the anus and pleasure is achieved through bladder and bowel movement.
What age does the phallic stage occur and what does it include?
3-5/6 years
Child focuses on genitals and other genitals
(Oedipus & electra complex takes place)
What happens in the Oedipus complex?
boys rival their mothers affection
Sexual desires towards mother begin and feelings of wanting to replace farther
Boy thinks if farther finds out he will castrate him and therefore boy develops castration anxiety
As a result boy imitates farther to please him
this is called IDENTIFICATION!
What is identification?
When a son acts likes his farther to please him
What happens in the Electra complex?
Similar to Oedipus however daughters feel they have already been castrated
What age does the latency stage occur and what does it include?
Between 5-6 years and puberty and latency means hidden , so sexual desires are hidden and energy is worked out through school and hobbies etc.
What age does the genital stage occur and what does it include?
puberty to adult
Focuses on genitals of another person
What is the difference between brain and mind?
Brain- Physical
Mind- theretical
What are the 3 parts to the mind?
Conscious
Pre-conscious
Unconscious
What is the conscious level of the mind?
Everything we are aware of e.g thoughts
What is the pre-conscious level of the mind?
everything we can access but we aren’t thinking about e.g. memories
What is the unconscious level of the mind?
Things that aren’t easily accessible e.g. fears
what is the ID part of the personality?
The ‘I want it now’ principle, presents itself when were born.
What is the EGO part of the personality?
Its the ‘reality principle’, the gratification that we cant have anything instantly.
What is the SUPER EGO part of the personality?
our conscience, like the voice telling us what is right and wrong, the rules we learn

to report the findings of the five year old boys, ho has a fear of horses

When hans mother was bathing hanna , hans admitted he wished his mother would let go of hanna so she would drown.
what was freuds interpretation of the bath phobia?
Suggests his fear of baths was linked to his jealousy of hanna and death wish for her

What was the girafffe dream?
Hans described his dream, there was a big giraffe in the room and a crumpled one, the big one called out because i took the crumpled one away from it, then it stopped and i sat on the crumpled one.
what was freuds interpretation of the giraffe dream?
Hans farther suggested that this was symbolic him taking the mother away from hans. Hans used to get to get into bed with his parents , but his farther objected. Freud believed the big giraffe was this farther as little hans had taken the crumpled one (mother) away.

What was the fear of horses?
When hans was 4 and a half years old, he began to develop a fear a white horse would bite him, particularly ones with black around their mouth.
what was freuds interpretation of fear of horses?
suggested that this phobia was symbolic of his farther as hans farther had a black moustache
What was the plumber 1 fantasy?
hans expressed a fantasy that a plumber came and first removed his bottom and widdler, then replaced them with larger ones
what was freuds interpretation of plumber fantasy 1?
This was thought of as a resolution of Hans anxieties and fears, identifying with his farther.

Resolution/overcoming oedipus complex
what was plumber 2 fantasy?
about a plumber that visited him in the bath and unscrewed the plug, he took a plunger and stuck it in his stomach
what was freuds interpretation of the plumber 2 fantasy?
Freud believed this was symbolic of hans being in bed with his mother and farther and his farther pushing him away with his widdler, therefore plunger is symbolic of widdler.
What was the marrying the mother fantasy ?
hans fantasied he was married to his mother and he was playing with his own children he promoted his farther to grand- farther.
what was freuds interpretation of the marring the mother fantasy?
thought to be another resolution to hans fears and anxieties. Hans made space for his farther in his life but was grand farther, so hans could be the farther.
