Bandura Flashcards
how many participants were used and where were they from?
72 (36 boys and girls) from Stanford university nursery school.
What ages were the participants?
between 3 and 5.
mean age of 4.4 years.
What was the research method?
Lab
What was research design?
Independent measures
How many children were in each condition?
24
what are the 3 conditions
Aggressive, non-aggressive and control
each condition had 4 sub-condition what are they?
6 boys with opposite sex model
6 boys with same sex model
6 girls with same sex model
6 girls with opposite sex model
How long were children in room 1?
10 minutes
How long were children in room 2?
2 minutes
How long were children in room 3?
20 minutes
what items were in room 1?
small table and chair, potato prints and picture stickers.
what did the model do when they went into the room?
Adult model went to the opposite corner of the room where there was a small table table, chair , tinker toy set, a mallet and a 5ft bobo doll.
What did the model do in non-aggressive condition?
model ignored the bobo doll and assembled the tinker toys in a “QUIET AND GENTLE MANNER”
what did the model do in the aggressive condition?
Model began assembling tinker toys, but after 1 minute turned to bobo and was aggressive to the doll in a very “STYLISED AND DISTINCTIVE WAY”
What was the physical aggression used?
RAISED THE BOBO DOLL AND POMMELED HIM ON THE HEAD WITH A MALLET
what was the verbal aggression used?
POW
SOCK HIM IN THE NOSE
What happened in room 2?
Child taken to a room with attractive toys. As soon as they started to play with them. The experimenter told the child that these toys were reserved for the other children.
What were children subjected to in room 2?
“mild aggression arousal”
What happened in room 3?
Room filled with both aggressive and non aggressive toys and children were observed every 5 SECONDS, giving 240 response units per child.
What sampling was used
time
What non-aggressive toys were in room 3 ?
Tea set, crayons, three bear and plastic farm animals
What aggressive toys were used in room 3?
Malet, peg board, dart guns and a 3ft bobo doll.
What are dependent variables?
Imitative aggression- This is aggression that directly copies the model in room 1.
Partially- imitative aggression: This includes using the mallet on other toys or sitting on bobo. Similar to aggression used i room 1.
Non- imitative aggression: This includes punching bobo in new ways, saying hostile things not said by the model.
No aggression
What are the independent variables?
Behavior of the model: aggressive, non aggressive / control.
Sex of the model: (male & female) half children saw male model and saw female model.
Sex of child: boy/girl
what were the children tested on before the study began, who did this and why were they matched?
Pretested on aggression, nursery teacher and experimenter observed them on a 1-5 point rating scale on physical and verbal aggression.
Name one finding
Children in model condition were more aggressive than children in non aggressive condition
Name a second finding
male models have more of an impact on boys compared to female models on girls.
Name a third finding
boys imitate more physical aggression than girls , however didn’t differ in verbal aggression.
