Assumptions Flashcards
What is the cognitive approach assumption?
Assumes our behaviour is influenced by inner mental processes . For example, how we perceive the world may influence our behaviour.
What are similarity between 2 studies?
Quantitative data
What are examples of when quantitative data was collected?
Loftus and palmer - mean estimate of speed of the cars in the traffic accident clips in mph.
Baron-Cohen- Score on the eyes task out of 25 for each correctly identified emotion/ mental state
What is a Difference between 2 studies ?
Research method
What are examples of different research methods?
Loftus and palmer- lab experiment- manipulated the verbs used
Savage - Rumbah- quasi- naturally pygmy chimps or common
What is a strength of the cognitive approach?
Obtain quantitative data
Examples: Loftus and palmer collected it by the estimated speed I the traffic incident in mph.
Baron-Cohen collected data by the score on the yes task out of 25
This is a strength as it quick and easy to analyse
What is a second strength of the cognitive approach?
Conducted in a lab setting
Loftus and palmer- IV was manipulated (the verb)
Baron-Cohen - controlled environment & controlled tasks which were standardized
This is a strength as there are less demand characteristics and less confounding variables
What is a weakness of the cognitive approach?
Lack ecological validity
Savage - Rumbah chimps were raised in captivity
Baron Cohen - When identifying emotions we don’t see photos and we see their whole face.
This is a weakness as we cant generalise finding to real life.
What is a second weakness of the cognitive approach?
Ignores biological differences
L& P ignored emotions at the time which could influence memory
BC only looked for theory of mind as an explanation for autism, didn’t explore biological explanations
May not be representative of actual human behaviour
What is assumption of the developmental approach?
Assumes our behaviour is influenced by systematic stages we go through in our development
What are 2 similarities between 2 studies?
Quantitative data
S+B - number of errors made out of 12 on the mass, number and volume conservation task.
Bandura- aggression shown in phrase three, obtained 240 response units as they recorded for 20 minutes, every 5 seconds
What is a another difference between 2 studies?
Research method
Freud uses a case study, investigate little hans for a long period.
Bandura uses lab experiment as IVs are manipulated e.g. aggressive
What is one strength of developmental approach?
Freud looked at psycho sexual stages of development particularly the phallic stage.
Bandura looked at imitation through children.
This is a strength as they have useful applications and can be generalised to a real life situation.
What is a second strength of the developmental approach?
Uses systematic methods to obtain quantitative data
Bandura tallied imitation of children every 5 seconds, resulted in 240 response units .
S+B recorded the number of errors made on the mass, volume and number conservation tasks made of 20.
This is a strength as its easy to analyse
What is a weakness of the developmental approach?
Conducted in a lab setting
S+B manipulated the IV of fixed array, one judgment and standard.
Banduras took place in three separate rooms and one with one way mirror
This is a weakness as it increases the chance of demand characteristics and lacks ecological validity
