Thermoregulatory Sytem Flashcards
Ectoderm
Animals that that rely on their environment to maintain their body temperature
Thermoregulation
Refers to the methods animal use to keep their bodies within the correct temperatures
Ectothermy
Endothermy
Ectotherms
Need to be kept in warm environments at all times
What animals are ectothermic
All reptiles and amphibians
Endothermic
Animals that control their temperature using internal metabolic processes
Change body temp too high
The animal feels hot, imitating cooling mechanisms such as panting
Change body temp too low
The body will began to shake caused by sketal muscles being instructed to vibrate to help them warm up
What environment are ectothermic less suited to
snowy conditions
Two advances endotherms have over ectotherms
- They can warm themselves up without having to eat food
- Endotherms can warm up more easier then ectotherms can
Outline how homeostasis of body temperature functions in a dog
He will seek a cool place in the shade to lie down to absorb the coolness (conduction)
