Respiratory System Flashcards
Function of respiratory system
Moves fresh air into your body while removing waste gases
Three structures of the respiratory system
Nasal chambers
Larynx
Trachea
what’s the Nasal chambers
The interior of the nose
What’s the larynx
The voice box
What’s the trachea
The windpipe, this tube carries air into the lower respiratory system
Function of bronchi
The two main passageways that carry air into the lungs, one for each lung
Function of Bronchioles
Branches that form from the bronchi
Function of alveoli
Microscopic sacs. Allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass through known as a gas exchange.
Function of the lungs
The organs within the gas exchange takes place. There are two lungs
Function of diaphragm
This is a muscle which is responsible for breathing
What is ventilation
More formal term for breathing and takes place as follows
What inhalation
The air sacs expand and draw air in from the mouth, which makes the diaphragm go down then pulls ribs up making more room in the chest for the enlarged lungs
Exhalation
Breathing muscles relax ribs go down and chest space decreases
Air sacs
Cavities in their body and which act like bellows to draw air in and push air out
Difference between mammals and bird respiratory system
Birds have nares instead of nostrils
Birds air sacs are infront or behind their lungs
Mammals have nostrils
Mammals air sacs are with the lungs
Bird inhale and exhale twice
Mammals inhale and exhale once
