Lymphatic System Flashcards
Structure of lymphatic system
Part of the immune system
Lymph glands
Lymph gland are connected to a series of lymph vessels
Two functions of lymphatic system
Maintenance and fluid balance
How do they carry out the functions
Collecting excess fluid from your body’s tissues and returning it to your bloodstream
Organs that play a role in the lymphatic system
Spleen
Thymus
Tonsils
Spleen
Located next to the stomach.
The spleen is a site for lymphocytes to gather to control red blood cells and white blood cells in the body
Thymus
train special white blood cells called T-lymphocytes or T-cells
Tonsils
Located in the throat.
Functions of lymphatic system
Drain fluid from tissue
Aid in fat digestion
Part of immune system
To drain fluid from tissue
As some blood is continually lost to the surrounds tissues, this fluid needs somewhere else to go.
To aid in fat digestion
Carbohydrates and protein are broken down into the bloodstream of small intestine
Immaune system
As almost all tissues in the body drain into the lymphatic system any pathogens will almost always make their way into it
B- lymphocytes
Also known as b cells are formed and mature in bone marrow but gather in the lymph gland.
T- lymphocytes (T cells)
Plays a similar role but can locate pathogens that have invaded cells of body
Transport of materials
Waste products pass from cells into the surrounding tissue fluid, which accumulates in the lymphatic system as lymph nodes
