Nervous Systems Flashcards
Nervous system
Allows information from the brain to travel to every part of the body.
Broken down into three separate but related systems
•central system
•the peripheral system
The autonomic system
Neurons
Another name for nerve cell
They make up the nervous system including the brain.
Adapted to transmit and receive electrical and chemical signals.
4 neurons
Nucleus- cell nucleus
Axon- long fibre that transmit electrical signals away from the nucleus
Axon terminals- the axon ends in numerous axon terminals
Dendrites- small extensions that connect to the nucleus
Gila
Surround and protect nureouns and ensure they are supplied with lots of nutrients
Autonomic nervous system
Other part of the peripheral system
Bodily functions - breathing, pupil size and heart rate
Sympathetic nervous system
Flight or fight
Response to steadily situations
Increasing heart rate
Parasympathetic nervous system
Rest and digest
Completely opposite the the sympathetic system as the parasympathetic system is nice and calm and helps the animal rest
