Thermoregulation Flashcards
What does endothermic mean?
It means the organism can control their own temperature through homeostasis
Define the term thermoregulation
Maintenance of body temperatures within a range that enables cells to function effectively
What mechanisms does the body use to increase heat loss?
Dilation of skin blood vessels, sweat glands produce perspiration
Describe one behavioural adaptation for increasing heat loss
Sit in the shade, put of the sun
What mechanisms are used by the body to reduce heat loss and increase temperature?
Skin blood vessels constrict, skeletal muscle will contract rapidly (shivering), smooth muscles around the hair follicles will contract, causing goose bumps
Why is it important for the human body to maintain a stable internal body temperature?
To allow for the enzymes to work effectively. Too cold will slow them down, too hot will cause for them to denature
What is the purpose of sweating and how does it achieve its effect?
Evaporation of water from skin. This will absorb any energy/heat.
