Plant transport systems Flashcards
1
Q
What is the role of xylem?
A
to move water and dissolved minerals from roots to leaves
2
Q
What is the role of phloem?
A
To transport material around the plant
3
Q
What is transpiration?
A
The evaporation of water through stomata
4
Q
What is translocation?
A
Transport of sugars from source (leaves) to sink (fruit)
5
Q
How does water move through plants?
A
- Water is taken up from soil and only moves in one direction - roots to leaves via xylem
6
Q
How does water move through the xylem?
A
Cohesion - water sticks to itself
Adhesion - water sticks to sides of the xylem tube
7
Q
How is sugar created and moved through plants?
A
- Glucose is made through photosynthesis and stored as starch
- Then transported via translocation in the sieve tubes with energy from a companion cell
