Asexual Reproduction Flashcards
Define asexual reproduction
When organisms reproduce by mitosis. The organism produced are exactly the same, genetically, as their parent.
Outline binary fission
Different to mitosis, as single chromosomes don’t line up in the middle
Example of an organism that undergoes binary fission
Prokaryotes (Bacteria, Archaea)
Outline budding (asexual reproduction)
Involves development of a new organisms or parts of an organism from an outgrowth of the parent organism
Budding example
Yeast
Outline vegetative propagation
Part of a plant becomes detached and develops into a whole new plant
Example of vegetative propagation
Grafting
Outline spore formation
Spores detach from the parent organism and develop into new individuals when organisms conditions are suitable
Spore formation example
Bread Mould
Advantages of asexual reproduction
-It is quicker
- Involves only one parent/ no partner
Disadvantages of asexual reproduction
- Rapid population growth
- Offspring are genetically identical
