Excretory System Flashcards
What is the role of the excretory system?
To remove metabolic wastes produced by the body.
What is the nephron?
The functional unit of the kidney
Where does filtration occur in the nephron?
Bowmans capsule
Where does reabsorption occur in the nephron?
Tubules and loop of henle
Where does secretion occur in the nephron?
The collecting duct
What is the order of steps in the nephron?
Filtration, Reabsorption, Secretion
Explain the process of filtration in the nephron
Urea, salts, water and glucose from the blood diffuses into Bowmans capsule
Explain the process of reabsorption in the nephron
Water and nutrients (glucose) are returned from the filtrate, into the bloodstream.
Explain the process of secretion in the nephron
Active transport of substances, such as ions and drugs, from blood into distal tube.
What is filtered during filtration of the nephron?
Urea, salts, water and glucose
What is reabsorbed during reabsorption in the nephron?
Water and glucose
What is secreted during secretion of the nephron?
Ions and drugs
What are the 4 organs of the excretory system?
Kidney, ureters, bladder, urethra
What are capillaries?
Tiny blood vessels, one cell thick
