Theories Of Learning Movement Skills Flashcards
Operant conditioning
Learning occurs through a connection between a stimulus and a response. This is known as the S-R bond.
Structure conditions
Manipulating the environment
E.g increasing size of goal to make it easier
Trial and error
Multiple attempts at the skill
E.g 10 attempts at shooting into goal- player adjusts technique to score
Behaviour shaping
Successful attempts mould correct response
E.g coach giving high five for scoring
Positive reinforcement
Praise used to strengthen S-R bond towards desired response
E.g coach says well done for correct shooting technique
Negative reinforcement
Removal of negative stimulus to strengthen S-R bond towards desired response
E.g coach removing criticism when shot is successful
Punishment
Negative stimulus to weaken S-R bond
E.g 10 laps/ push ups for missing shot/goal
Exercise
The performer must practice the skill to strengthen SR bond
Readiness
An SR bond can only be created and strengthened if performer is mentally and physically mature enough
Effect
When a correct action is shown ‘praise’ should be given to strengthen SR bond
