EPOC Flashcards
EPOC definition
Volume of oxygen consumed post exercise to return body to pre exercise state.
2 components of EPOC
Alactacid
Lactacid
Alactacid component
First & fast - 10% of total EPOC (takes up to 3 mins)
Restoration on ATP and PC system - 3 mins for 100% 30 secs for 50%.
Myoglobin replenishment - takes up to 2 mins.
How- uses 1-4 litres of oxygen.
Use of aerobic energy system for endothermic energy production.
Increased ventilation and circulation of body.
Lactacid component
Second & slow - 90% of total EPOC (3mins - 24 hours)
Replenishes glycogen/glucose stores.
Removes lactic acid.
60% of lactic acid converted to pyruvic acid.
How- 5-8 litres of oxygen required
Increased ventilation and circulation
Increased body temp
Increased removal of CO2
Strategies to help EPOC
Warm up/ cool down
Tactics - slow tempo of game, use set plays
Time outs/substitutions
High levels of aerobic/anaerobic fitness
Natural breaks/half time
Cooling aids
