-DIPLOMATIC AND HUMAN RIGHTS SUPPORT: e.g UK helped monitor Sir Lanka elections

what is the WTO’S purpose
economic corporation, trade negotiations, hold each other to account, equal place for countries (LED- MED countries)
why has the UK financially contributed to the WTO?
support LED countries, in order to stimulate trade
what was the UK gov policy towards WTO 2016?
encourage free trade and oppose attempts by govs to protect their countries businesses from competition
what does boycott mean?
refusal to use/have anything to do with something/product
what does fair trade mean?
system of buying and selling products that aims to buy the produce at a fair pirce
what does free trade mean?
trade between countries which is not restricted by things such as taxes + imports
what are tarrifs?
taxes on imports + exports
why do high income countries prefer free trade?
global companies can grow quicker, maximise profit
why do low income countries prefer fair trade?
goes to the producers, fair trade staff will be paid a fair wage, have good working conditions and be allowed to form a trade union
what role does WTO play in disagreements?
negotiating international fair trade agreement. WTO help sort out dispute e.g charging tariffs when shouldn’t
why may some organisations not want a boycott?
Put employees and producers out of work
advantages of tarrifs?
-more money for gov
-business in home country have a better chance of competing
disadvantages of tarrifs?
-imported goods and services become more expensive
-may cause other countries to impose tariffs in response affecting exporters
advantages of fair trade?
-without it people can be exploited, underpaid leading to poverty
-lead to families being able to afford to develop infrastructure, schools, transports
