what is censorship?
practice of limiting access to information, ideas or books in order to prevent knowledge or freedom of thought
what does libel mean?
writting incorrect things about people
what is slander?
saying incorrect things about people
when should the press be limited?
-Jury information, stop trial from being compromised
-anything offensive or discimatory, can cause hate crime
-national security, prevent terrorist attacks and “giving the game away” to a disliked country e.g margaret thatcher UK falklands news limited
what is the role of the media in a democracy?
-exchanging ideas and opinions,
-holding those in power to account
-inform citizens of news that is public interest
-investigate journalism to uncover any wrong doings
-influence public opinion
what are 2 advantages of publicly funded media (BBC)?
-meets a certain quality as it’s paid through the tax payer
-due to it being impartial, an accurate representation of the Media’s role in society through it’s neutrality and agenda to inform citezens on PUBLIC INTEREST, less corruption
how is BBC funded?
license fee
what does the BBC being publicly funded mean?
it must be impartial, and not promote or support particular viewpoint or political party
disadvantage of privately owned news sources?

-trying to influence public opinion, high levels of corruption as RUPER MURDOCH owns a majority of news outlets which all lean right, highlighting his control over viewpoints
IMPORTANT: what is freedom of expression?
the right to hold opinions and to express them freely without government interference. including right to express views through published articles, boks, leaflets, tv etc
IMPORTANT: freedom of information (FOI) request?
a request for information held by public authority, such as a council or healthcare provider, FOI act (FOIA) of 2000, gives the public the right to request information from public authorities
why is the FOIA important?
ensure the public are aware of authority actions to be aware of any wrong doings by people in power
what are the media’s legal responsibilities RESTRICTED BY?
-the interest of national security
-protection of healthcare and morals
-protect reputation of others
-maitian authority or impartiality of the judiciary (judges and courts)
what is public interest?
information that the public have a right to know( e.g local hospital shutting down) different from an interest in a celebrities personal life
what are some of the editors code of practice?
-must respect people’s family and personal life
-not report inaccurate, misleading headlines and pcitures
-not intrude children schooling
-not identify victims of SA
-protect confidential sources
