Define Nosocomial infection?
Is an infection acquired whilst at hospital
Define Asepsis?
is the absence of pathogenic microorganisms that cause disease.
Define surgical asptic technique?
Is a method employed to maintain asepsis and minimise the risk of introducing pathogens into a surgical wound. it protects the patient from infection associated with healthcare.
define sterile technique
is a method by which contamination by micro-organisms is prevented to maintain sterility through out the procedure.
How do you create a sterile field?
ensuring that patient, table and trolley covered in sterile drapes
all equipment and instruments are sterile and withing sterile field
all staff operating within the sterile field have preformed a surgical scrub.
What is the role of a circulating nurse?
Help prep theatre tying in surgical team help position patient on table preparation of surgical site connecting apparatus opening instruments etc being in theatre all times whilst surgery in process assisting anaesthetist preparing post op dressings help move patient to recovery Help clear theatre at end of surgery
what is the role of a scrubbed nurse?
know whats on the trolley count swabs, needles etc anticipate surgeons needs wipe instruments with dry swab when returned to trolley apply swab firmly to bleeding site irrigate tissue with warmed saline
what should you check before opening sterile packaging
packaging content correct processing packaging integrity expiry date sterilisation indicator packaging is dry
What should you not do if the gown cuff has moved to your wrist?
you should no pull it back over your hand again - instead use open gloving
what precautions should be taken by the scrubbed person?
Sterile field should not be left unattended
conversation kept to minimum
people in theatre limited
movement should be kept to minimum
non sterile equipment should be covered before moving into sterile field
scrubbed staff should pass back to back
scrubbed staff should avoid changing levels - i.e sitting or standing
a wide space between scrubbed staff and non scrubbed staff
what precautions should be taken by un-sterile staff?
they should face the sterile field when approaching
should not touch or lean over the sterile field
should not walk between two components of the sterile field
whats are the 2 types of bacteria that skin harbours?
Transient bacteria - acquired by contamination
residual bacteria - present/lives on skin surfaces
the scrub its self should?
Remove gross dirt
reduce transient micro-organisms to zero
reduce and have depressant
What are the most common scrub solutions and what they are effective against?
Providine iodine - broad spectrum antimicrobial activity (bactericidal, virucidal and fungicidal
Chlorhexidine - most bacteria, virucidual, fungicidal and sporicidal properties
triclosan - antibacterial against both gram positive and gram negative
why should you keep your hands higher than you elbows when scrubbing
so that the water drains down towards unscrubbed skin
