-described themselves as defenders of a ‘hereditary civilisation and Christianity’
-their stated purpose was ‘the extermination of the carpetbag element’ and restoration of white supremacy
-the objectives of the league had shifted away from merely showing force in support of the coming November midterm elections to a possible violent overthrow of Louisiana’s Republican Government
