What did the Warren Court state?
‘separate education facilities are inherently unequal’
What did Brown assert?
-Brown asserted that the system if ‘separate but equal’ instead excused the inferior accommodations services and treatment of AAs rather than help
What was the main argument?
-the education system was promoting segregation and the mental abilities of black children were capped due to the lack of resources and opportunities and the poor quality of education offered by the system
What did Brown deliver at Court on May 14th 1954?
-he delivered the opinion of the Court stating ‘we conclude that in the field of public education the doctrine of ‘separate but equal’ has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.’
What was the short term negative impacts?
-very slow changes to start off with (took a year for the Court to issue an order enforcing the decision)
-didn’t help students immediately after the case
What was the short term positive impact?
-sense of more equality even though it wasn’t evident
What were the long term positive impacts?
-disbanded the segregation presented by the ‘Separate but equal’ ideology which allowed many people to advance their rights->became a catalyst for the civil rights movement
What was the long term negative impact?
-there are still hundreds of cases of desegregation open to the court and also cases of racism in schools
