What happened on February 1st 1960 with Sit-ins?
-4 African American students went up to a ‘whites-only’ restaurant in a local Woolworths store (North Carolina) and ordered coffee
What did the 4 students do? (Sit-ins)
-when service was refused the students sat down and refused to move until they were served despite threats and intimidation
What did onlookers try to do? (Sit-ins)
-onlookers would try to provoke the demonstrators but they refused to retaliate
What happened when the police came? (Sit-ins)
-when police came to arrest the demonstrators more would come to fill the vacated seats
How many demonstrators were arrested by the end of the school year? (Sit-ins)
-before the end of the school year over 1,500 black demonstrators were arrested
What happened on May 4th 1961? (Freedom Rides)?
-13 AAs and white civil rights activists launched the Freedom Rides which were a series of bus trips through the South to protest segregation
What did AA Freedom Riders use?
-’whites-only’ restrooms and lunch counters and bus seats and white Freedom Riders did the opposite
What amount of violence did the group encounter? (Freedom Rides)
-large amounts of violence from white people but managed to draw international attention to their cause

-the Interstate Commerce Commission issued regulations prohibiting segregation in bus and train stations nationwide
