The use of finishes Metals 3.1.5 Flashcards
What is the method and purpose of electroplating?
(Metal Finishing)
The metal is placed in a container with an electrolyte solution and then a direct current is applied, the product will attract the donor metal and is electroplated
- Protective layer, enhanced aesthetics
What is the method and purpose of sealants?
(Metal Finishing)
The sealant is applied with a cloth to the machine pad to produce a film that is then allowed to cure for 15 mins. It is then buffed with a cloth to shine.
- Protects polished surfaces from decay and tarnishing
What is the method and purpose of Preservatives?
(Metal finishing)
Applied by wiping with a cloth
- applied protection
- used on moulds and dies to prevent fingerprints
What is the method and purpose of Preservatives?
(Metal finishing)
Electric current is passed through the electrolyte, and current flows from the positive to negative electrode
aluminum oxide layer and builds on the treated part.
can be finished with clear varnish lacquer or varnish to provide further protection
- used on aluminum to enhance the natural oxide layer, resulting in increased hardness and toughness.
- can provide colour
e.g torches
What is Cathodic Protection
This is a method used to control the rate of corrosion by using a sacrificial metal which is more easily corroded allowing the base metal to be corroded
-Used to protect steel structures buried in soil or immersed water
What are the two methods of cathodic Protection?
Impressed current
Sacrificial Anode
What is the method and purpose of Cellulose and acrylic paints?
Paints are used on low-cost materials, the surface is cleaned and degreased, which allows for the primer coat to grip to the surface
- Red oxide layer primer is uses followed by an undercoat in a similar color.
- provides colour and textured finish
- provides a barrier against corrosion
