Polymer Processes 3.1.4 Flashcards
What is Calendering(Polymer Process)?
Using heated rollers to squash and stretch polymer to make it thinner- used for continous production.
Uses thermoplastic pallets
What is Injection Moulding(Polymer Process) ?
Makes complex 3D shapes
- Archimedes screw - hydraulic press - granules. Large-scale mass production
Used for electrical products
What is Blow Moulding(Polymer Process) ?
Produces hollow components
Used for drink bottles - shampoo - detergents
Extruder, Parison
continuous Production
What is Rotational Moulding(Polymer Process) ?
Hollow components with large wall thickness
Mould is continuously rotated through heating and cooling.
Large Scale batch or Mass production
Traffic cones, children’s play equipment.
Thermoplastic powder or granules
What is extrusion(Polymer Process) ?
like injection moulding but poymers use is forced through a die
Continuous Production
Solid rods, tubing, curtain rack.
continous production
What is Compression Moulding(polymer Process)?
Uses a pre-weighed slug of polymer
removed from mould while still warm
continuous Production
Electrical fittings, light switches plugs
Thermoset polymer
What is Lay Up Lamination? (polymer Process)
Requires a former around a mould
A top gel coat is applied
Firbe based composite sheets
USES - kayaks
Line Bending
Uses an electrically heated element that provides heat along a line.
slow process
one of production
acrylic boxes shelves
Thermoplastic sheet
Thermoforming
Like vacuum forming but there is an additional mould which is pressed into the surface of the sheet
