3.1.1 Classification of Materials Flashcards
What is a ferrous metal ?
A ferous metal contains iron and carbon, Ferrous metals are magnetic and will rust
What are examples of ferrous metals ?
Low carbon steel, medium carbon steel , cast iron
What is a non ferrous metal
A metal that does not contain iron, they are not magnetic and do not rust.
Examples of non ferrous metals
Aluminium, copper, Zinc, silver , gold , titanium , tin
What is an alloy ?
A metal made of two or more metals.
what are some examples of ferrous alloys
stainless steel , die steels (tool steel)
what are some examples of non ferrous alloys
broze brass, pewter
What are hardwoods
Woods from deciduous (broad leafed) trees. These trees are generally slow growing and lose their leaves in autumn.
What are softwoods
A wood from a coniferous tree (cone bearing )
fast growing evergreen trees
What are some examples of Hardwoods ?
Oak , Ash , mahogany teak , birch , beech
What are some examples of softwoods ?
pine , spruce, douglas fir , redwood , cedar , larch
what are manufactured boards ?
A man man wood wood based composite material
availible in much larger sizes than solid wood.
what are some exaples of manufactured boards
Plywood, aeroply , flexi ply , MDF chipboard
What are Thermoplastics ?
A material that can be repeatedly reheated and reshaped allowing it to be recycled.
They have a long chain of molecules.
What are some examples of Thermo plastics ?
LDPE - HDPE - PP - HIPS - ABS - PMMA PET , nylon , PVC
What are thermosetting polymers ?
A material which when heated undergoes chemical chnage where the moleculed form ridgid cross links.
They cannot be reheated and reshaped at high temperatures
What are some examples of thermosetting polymers ?
UF - MF polyester resin , expoxy resin.
What is an elastomer ?
elastomers are materials that can be deformed and then turn back to original shape. They have weak bonds which allow them to be stretched
What are some examples of elastomers ?
Natural rubber, polybutadiene , neoprene, silcone.
What are paper boards ?
They are compliant materials, that can be scored folded and cut.
What is composite material ?
A composite material is material made up of two or more materials that enhance the properties of the material.
What are some examples of composite material ?
carbon fibre reinforced plastic, glass fibre reingofrced plastic , concrete
What is a smart material ?
A smart material whos physical properties change in response to an stimulus , when the stimulus is removed the properties change back.
Whare some examples of smart materials ?
Shape memory alloys , thermochromatic pigment , phosphhorescent pigment, photochromatic pigment.
What is a modern material ?
A modern material is a material that have been developed through the invention of new or improved processes.
What are some examples of the modern modern materials ?
kevlar, high density modelling foam, polymorph
