What is CFD (Computational Fluids Dynamics)
CFD is a 3D CAD simulation tool for fluid or gas flow in or around a product.
What is CFD used for ?
fluid or gas flow in and around a product - vehicle drag (wind resistance can be tested)
Benefits Of CFD
Testing can inform aerodynamic improvements
Designers save time and money that would be required for physical testing.
What is FEA (Finite Element and Analysis)
Finite Element Analysis is is the analysis of stress in elements of CAD design
Benefits of Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
- It allows desingers to simulate forces , vibration or shock loads on products or componnents
- weak points are highlighted by colour coded scale
- Money and time can be saved as the desings are optimised by modifying and re- testing.
what Is Unit Production Systems (UPS) ?
Unit productions systems are used in textile product manufacture. It is the use of overhead transporter devices to improve factory efficiency.
Reason for UPS ?
- Incorporates appropriate hanging carriers to convey the garment components between workstations.
- Reduces handling operations, optimises labour and equipment use, and improves quality.
What Is Quick Response Manufacturing ? (QRM)
Quick response Manufacturing is a manufacturing strategy for reducing lead times.
It is the use of Computer based technology to make low volume, customised products efficiently and competitively.
What is a lead time ?
The time taken to respond to orders (must be as short as possible to compete successfully).
What is Vertical In House Production / Vertical Intergration ?
Vertical integration means that a company owns their own supply chain. Setting up to manufacture parts and sub assemblies rather than buying them.
What are the advantages of vertical intergration ?
- Reduced risk of component price increase
- Quality assurance strategies are easier to implement
- Protects the brand and and improves security of intellectual property rights
What are the disadvantages of vertical intergration ?
- Reduction in flexibility
- Increase in administration
- Specialisation is reduced , potentially diluting expertise.
What is an IP?
Intellectual Property is something that has been physically created and did not exist before, such as a book or film, a handbag, and a car manufacturer name badge. (ideas do not count as an IP because they were not physically made)
Why do designers need to obtain IPR?
Intellectual property rights. Designers need to obtain IPR to protect their original ideas
