Performance characteristics of Paper and Boards 3.1.2 Flashcards
3.1.2
What are the standard sizes of paper stock forms?
A0 - (Largest size)
A8 - (Smallest size)
What is the unit for paper thickness?
Grams per square metre (gsm)
What are the performance characteristics of paper and boards?
- They come from wood pulp
- during manufacture bleaches are added to the paper to make them more white.
- natural source makes it more suitable for recycling. biodegradable
Can be scored.
what are the characteristics and applications for Layout Paper?
Properties : thin translucent paper with smooth surface.
Uses : sketching, tracing, technical drawing
what are the characteristics and applications for Cartridge Paper?
Properties : Off white paper , textured surface.
Uses : sketching, rendering
what are the characteristics and applications for Tracing Paper?
Properties : Translucent Paper, slightly thicker than layout paper.
Uses: copying images when sketching.
What are the characteristics and applications for Bleed Proof Paper?
Properties : Similar to Cartridge Ppaer but is bleed-proof proof so does not allow colours to run.
Uses: Marker Rendering
What are the characteristics and applications for Treated Paper?
Properties : Plain Paper with clear binder or dye applied to help hold the image on the surface
Uses: Photographic Printing.
What are the characteristics and applications for Water Colour Paper?
Properties : heavily textured rough
Uses: Water colour Painting
What are the characteristics and applications for
Corrugated Card?
Properties : Usually with a carton board outer layer and corrugated middle layer giving the material better protection properties.
Uses: Protective packaging, modeling prototyping and takeaway boxes.
e.g cardboard
What are the characteristics and applications for Water Bleached Card?
Properties : chemically treated to brighten the surface to make it more suitable for high-quality printing.
Uses: Greeting cards, high-quality packaging.
What are the characteristics and applications for Mount board?
Properties : Made from compressed fine cotton fibers to produce a rigid board.
Uses: Presenting art wood, picture mounting, modeling.
What are the characteristics and applications for Duplex Card?
Properties : Made up of two layers of paper, with the exterior often coated to make it more water resistant and to give it a glossy sheen and waxy feel.
Uses: Food Packaging such as juice milk cartons
What are the characteristics and applications for Foil-backed and laminated card?
Properties : Card with polymer film or foil applied to provide a water-resistant and or heat-insulating layer.
Uses: Drinks packaging, milk cartons take away box lids.
What are the characteristics and applications of Metal effect Card?
Properties : High-quality card with a thin metal effect layer applied to the outer surface for enhanced aesthetics. Can be embossed.
Uses: gifted boxes, bank cards
