Adhesives and Fixings 3.1.4.5 Flashcards
What is PVA and what is it used for?
PVA is a water-based adhesive used to bond wood to wood.
- Not usually a waterproof adhesive
- can be used in wooden products.
What is Contact adhesive and what is it used for?
Used for bonding large areas such as sheet material
- Can be used to join the same or different materials together
- Adhesion is instant
What is UV hardener adhesive and what is it used for?
A clear liquid that curves to form a bond when exposed to UV light.
- contains photoinitiator, absorbs UV light.
- Can be used to join metal glass and polymers
- excess can be wiped which gives it a clean joint.
What is Solvent Cement and what is it used for?
A clear liquid called dichloromethane used to join polymers such as acrylic
- soften the surface, seep into join together.
- Can be used in the plumbing industry to bond non-pressure pipes.
What is Epoxy Resin and what is it used for?
Comes in two parts, resin, and hardener, used to join different materials together
- Equal amounts of resin and harder are mixed together which then takes time to full set.
