The Thoracoappendicular Muscles Flashcards
What are Thoracoappendicular muscles?
Muscles of the thorax that move the upper limb
What is the PNUEMONIC for remembering the 3 adductors of the upper limb?
Lady between 2 MAJORS
From anterior to posterior
Using the pneumonic what are the 3 adductors of the upper limb?
Pectoralis major
Latissimus dorsi
Teres major
What are the 3 muscles for upper limb ABduction?
Supraspinatus
Deltoid
Trapezius (Upper fibres)
What are the roles of all 3 of the muscles in upper limb ABduction?
Supraspinatus (Initiates ABduction)
Deltoid (Abducts up to 90º)
Trapezius (Rotates scapula taking abduction past 90º)
What is the muscle which elevates the scapula?
Levator scapulae
(On the superior angle of the scapula)
What muscle contributes to depression of the scapula along with gravity?
Trapezius (Inferior fibres)
What muscle does protraction?
Serratus anterior
What innervates serratus anterior?
Long thoracic nerve
Where is serratus anterior?
On top of first 8 ribs and travels round rib cage attaching to anterior surface of medial border of scapula
What are the 2 main muscles for retraction of the upper limb via the scapula?
Rhomboid major
Rhomboid minor
(Some from trapezius middle fibres)
Where are rhomboid major and rhomboid minor found?
Posterior aspect underneath the trapezius
What movements does the trapezius contribute to?
Elevate and rotate scapula in ABDUCTION
RETRACTION of scapula
Depression of scapula
Which fibres of the trapezius helps with ABduction by rotating the scapula?
Superior/upper fibres
Which fibres of the trapezius helps with retraction of the scapula?
Middle fibres
