Rotator Cuff Flashcards
What is the rotator cuff?
4 intrinsic shoulder muscles that form the musculartendinous cuff around the Glenohumeral joint
What is the pneumonic to remember the 4 muscles that make up the rotator cuff?
SITS
Using the pneumonic what are the 4 intrinsic shoulder muscles that make up the rotator cuff?
SITS
Supraspinatus
Infraspinatus
Teres minor
Subscapularis
As well as movement, what is the other function of the rotator cuff muscles resting tone?
Stabilise the Glenohumeral joint by holding/pulling the large head of the humerus in the glenoid fossa
What bones do all of the muscles of the Rotator cuff originate on and insert on?
Origin = Scapula
Insertion = Proximal Humerus
Where do all of the rotator cuff muscles (Supraspinatus, infraspinatus and Teres minor) except Subscapularis insert?
Greater tubercle of the Humerus
Where does the Subscapularis (exception) insert?
Lesser tubercle of the humerus
Which of the rotator cuff muscles is superior to the Glenohumeral joint?
Supraspinatus
Which of the rotator cuff muscles is inferior to the Glenohumeral joint?
Infraspinatus
Teres minor
Which of the rotator cuff muscles is anterior to the Glenohumeral joint?
Subscapularis
What are the 2 rotator cuff muscles that are posterior to the Glenohumeral joint and what is their function?
Infraspinatus
Teres minor
Lateral rotation of upper limb
What is the rotator cuff muscle that is superior to the Glenohumeral joint and what is its function?
Supraspinatus
Initiates abduction
What is the rotator cuff muscle that is anterior to the Glenohumeral joint and what is its function?
Subscapularis
Medial rotation of joint
What is the origin of the Supraspinatus?
Supraspinous fossa of scapula
What is the innervation of Supraspinatus?
Suprascapular nerve
